You never know when or where, but when it happens, be prepared with your digital video recorder activated. If a motorist suddenly cuts into your lane and slams on the their brakes, and you rear end that vehicle. Who's fault would this be? I should hope the other driver, however, the fault determination may be given to the driver who can verbally convince the officer.  This is the main reason why we insist our clients to use the digital video recorder.
I recently spoke with a gentlemen about an incident that was caught on his dash camera where, an erratic driver slammed her brakes in front of his vehicle almost causing a collision.  Furthermore, the erratic driver was caught exiting her vehicle and approaching the gentlemen's vehicle with key in hand!  Fantastic evidence for the Police to lay charges.  I asked this person to release video to my upon court completion.

What does a vehicle EDR (Event data recorder) record?

The main reason why the Blackvue unit should be used in conjunction with the vehicles EDR.

In a crash or a near car crash event, the SRS airbag sensor assembly contains the EDR.  This device may record some or of all of the following information:

1. Engine speed
2. Brake pedal applied or not
3. Vehicle speed
4. What extent the accelerator pedal was depressed
5. Position of the transmission shifter lever.
6. Whether the driver and front passenger wore seat belts or not.
7. Driver's seat position.
8. SRS airbag deployment data.
9. SRS airbag system diagnostic data.
10. Front passenger's occupant classification

The EDR does not record sound data such as conversation between occupants.

The follow exemptions for when the manufacture can disclose data recorded on the EDR:

1. If there is an agreement from the vehicle's owner.
2. Officially requested by the police or other authorities.
3. Used as a defense for the specific manufacture in a law suit.
4. Ordered by the court.
5. For research purposes.

Video Evidence for court

Fantastic, must read information on Video evidence in the judicial process. Written by James Careless, quotes from Elliott Goldstein (Lawyer):  “The party tendering video evidence must establish how the video was recorded, what impact the recording process had on the captured video, whether the exporting of the video evidence has further comprised the reliability of the images and whether all relevant video has been obtained of the incident in question.” As a result, “video evidence must be authenticated in order to gain admissibility in court. Authentication can be accomplished by witnesses familiar with the video content — for example, the person who captured the video images — or technically, showing that the images have not be altered in any improper way. This is a requirement of both the Canada Evidence Act and common law.”

Proper unit installation

• The Manufacture recommends that the unit is installed on the backside of the rearview mirror so that the Blackvue camera lens is at the center of the vehicle.
• The unit should be installed in an area where it does not block the driver's view.
• Avoid installing the unit near the Passenger side of the windshield (can be in contact with a deployed passenger side air bag).
• Do not adjust the unit while operating the motor vehicle

Investigated power supply options

I have enquired several local automotive electronics installers for quotes for wiring the Blackvue units directly to the fuse box, rather than using the cigarette power plug.  The professional installation from the fuse box to the windshield will run between 75-99 dollars. All wires are hidden, out of sight, out of mind.

However, I recommend a professional install for safety reasons. Whether you choose the hard wired or plug in, this unit will work flawlessly.

While we are on the topic of installs, if you have multiple vehicles, if your preference is to use fewer units, I recommend purchasing extra mounting brackets, to ease the sharing of the unit from vehicle to vehicle.
